Karmveer Bhaurao Patil dedicated to the noble cause of spreading education among the masses established Rayat Shikshan Sanstha in 1919. The Rayat Shikshan Sanstha with the people's co-operation established Balwant College, Vita in the year 1963. The College has been named after the respected father of the greatest son of India, Late Yashwantrao Chavan, the then Deputy Prime Minister of India, who has taken initiative and special efforts in the establishment of the college.
Affiliated to Shivaji University, Kolhapur, it offers full-fledged degree courses and Postgraduate Centres in English, Marathi, Economics, History, Organic, Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry, Zoology, Statistics, Microbiology, Physics and Taxation and Advanced Accountancy in Commerce. It also has recognized Research Laboratories for M. Phil and Ph. D in the subjects Chemistry, Zoology and Botany. Apart from this, it also offers professional courses of B.B.A., B.Sc. (Computer Science) and B. Com (IT). It has significant contribution in educational development of Khanapur Tehsil region.
The College takes pride in having a highly qualified, dedicated and enthusiastic staff: 27 Ph. D and 44 NET/ SET. In addition to conventional teaching, more emphasis is laid on imbibing moral and ethical values, career guidance, sports and co-curricular activities such as NCC, NSS and Sports. Thus, it has become a favoured destination for education seekers from Vita vicinity. This was humbly acknowledged by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) Bangalore in the year 2016 which awarded it by the prestigious ‘A’ grade. On the path of continued excellence, the college has successfully achieved funds from DST-FIST and RUSA. The College is also having ISO 9001:2015 Certification. As a recognition of its continuous quest for excellence the college is awarded with ‘The Best College Award’ by the parent institution.
